Kesalahan Umum Penggunaan Kata Benda Bahasa Inggris

Kesalahan-kesalahan umum penggunaan kata benda dalam bahasa Inggris. Banyak contoh kata benda yang memiliki persamaan arti dalam bahasa Inggris, namun penggunaan yang tepat dalam sebuah kalimat, harus dipahami secara benar. Berikut akan kita bahas kesalahan umum penggunaan kata benda dalam bahasa Inggris.


HOUSE & HOME

HOUSE: rumah
Salah: Many new homes are being built in that area.
Benar: Many new houses are being built in that area.

HOME: rumah (tempat tinggal)
Salah: You may go to your house now.
Benar: You may go to your home now.

HOUSE adalah bangunan (secara fisik) yang digunakan sebagai tempat tinggal, sedangkan HOME adalah rumah dimana seseorang tinggal.


STREET & ROAD

STREET: Jalan
Salah: The roads of the city are narrow.
Benar: The streets of the city are narrow.

ROAD: Jalan
Salah: Which is the street to the market?
Benar: Which is the road to the market?

STREET adalah jalan dengan bangunan di sisi kiri dan kanan (ada secara fisik), sedangkan ROAD adalah jalanan yang menghubungkan suatu daerah dengan daerah lainnya (bersifat kata benda abstrak).


STORY & HISTORY

STORY: cerita, kisah
Salah: Grandfather told us an interesting history.
Benar: Grandfather told us an interesting story.

HISTORY: sejarah
Salah: I am studying the story of the jews.
Benar: I am studying the history of the jews.


HABIT & CUSTOM
HABIT: kebiasaan (secara individual)
Salah: Telling a lie is a bad custom.
Benar: Telling a lie is a bad habit.

CUSTOM: kebiasaan (untuk orang banyak)
Salah: The Chinese have old habits.
Benar: The Chinese have old customs.


CAUSE & REASON
CAUSE: penyebab
Salah: What is the reason of malaria?
Benar: What is the cause of malaria?

REASON: alasan
Salah: I have a good cause for coming.
Benar: I have a good reason for coming.


SCENE & SCENERY

SCENE: pemandangan (pemandangan suatu tempat tertentu)
Salah: The scenery is of a beautiful waterfall.
Benar: The scene is of a beautiful waterfall.

SCENERY: pemandangan (pemandangan tempat secara umum)
Salah: The scene in Bali is beautiful.
Benar: The scenery in Bali is beautiful.


CENTER & MIDDLE

CENTER: pusat, pertengahan
Salah: Can you find the middle of the screen?
Benar: Can you find the center of the screen?

MIDDLE: ditengah, pertengahan
Salah: The man is standing in the center of the street.
Benar: The man is standing in the middle of the street.

CENTER adalah titik tertentu ditengah-tengah. MIDDLE adalah tempat di sekitar pertengahan.


SHADE & SHADOW

SHADE: naungan
Salah: The large tree makes a nice shadow to shelter.
Benar: The large tree makes a nice shade to shelter.

SHADOW: bayangan
Salah: We notice the shade of the trees against the moonlight.
Benar: We notice the shadow of the trees against the moonlight.


CLIENT & CUSTOMER

CLIENT: langganan, nasabah
Salah: That bank has many customers.
Benar: That bank has many clients.

CUSTOMER: langganan, nasabah
Salah: The store has many clients.
Benar: The store has many customers.


TRAVEL  & JOURNEY

TRAVEL: perjalanan
Salah: He is waiting a book about his journey.
Benar: He is waiting a book about his travels.

JOURNEY: perjalanan
Salah: Our travel to Europe was exciting.
Benar: Our journey to Europe was exciting.

TRAVEL adalah perjalanan dari suatu tempat ke tempat lain secara umum, sedangkan journey adalah perjalanan ke suatu tempat tertentu.


LEG & FOOT

LEG: kaki
Salah: The man fell down and broke his foot.
Benar: The man fell down and broke one of his legs.

FOOT: kaki
Salah: The man hurt his leg when bumping the stone.
Benar: The man hurt his foot when bumping the stone.

Leg adalah bagian kaki secara keseluruhan, sedangkan foot adalah bagian sekitar pergelangan kaki ke bawah.


FINGER & TOE

FINGER: jari tangan.
TOE: jari kaki

Salah: I hurt a finger of my right foot.
Benar: I hurt a toe of my right foot.


POETRY & POEM
Salah: I have a poetry to learn by heart.
Benar: I have a poem to learn by heart.

POETRY adalah bentuk kesusasteraan yang berhubungan dengan sajak, sedangkan POEM adalah bagian dari puisi.


DRESS & SUIT

Salah: My elder sister has a new suit.
Benar: My elder sister has a new dress.

DRESS untuk wanita, sedangkan suit untuk pria. Untuk dinyatakan secara umum (pria dan wanita) kita gunakan clothes.
Iwan and Siti are wearing new clothes.


COST & PRICE

Salah: What is the cost of this book?
Benar: What is the price of this book?

PRICE adalah harga yang dibayar oleh pembeli, sedangkan COST adalah harga yang ditetapkan oleh penjual.


APPETITE & DESIRE

APPETITE: selera, nafsu makan.
Salah: I have no desire for that food.
Benar: I have no appetite for that food.

DESIRE: selera, keinginan
Salah: I have no appetite at all to study.
Benar: I have no desire at all to study.

APPETITE adalah keinginan untuk makan/minum, sedangkan DESIRE adalah keinginan untuk melakukan suatu pekerjaan.
